Sunday February the 21st a suggestive guided tour is scheduled for english speakers, immersed in nature and history, gradually walking up to the top of the romantic Janiculum Hill, in the rione (historical district) of Trastevere.
We will start crossing the medieval Ponte Sisto and from Piazza Trilussa we will gradually go up towards San Pietro in Montorio, il Fontanone (the big fountain) and the panoramic Piazza Garibaldi, exploring the hill that silently watches the monuments of ancient Rome and the domes of the Renaissance and Baroque. At least until the 12 o’clock cannonade which once announced the exact time to the city coordinating the start of the ringing of the bells (even today on the hill the time is respected to the military second unlike some churches that seem to challenge the cannon by ringing a few seconds in advance).
The Colle (hill) was for a long time etruscan territory before becoming part of the city and a pleasant place for ancient horti (villas with gardens) and renaissance villas but above all it was the theater of the great desire for democracy and freedom of the Roman Republic in 1849 which, with the background of the Marseillaise and the Canto degli Italiani by Goffredo Mameli, will form the basis for the Italian Constitution in 1948. Anecdotes and stories about the history of our city will accompany us during this pleasant walk to slowly rediscover the known and hidden beauties in one of the most charming neighborhoods of Rome.
